today, tuesday, june 17, 2008, has insanity at uc berkeley and romance in san francisco (and the rest of the state, actually).

did you ever hear about the tree sitters at uc berkeley? the ones who, in order to protest a school building project that would tear down memorial oak grove to put in some new sports stadium, have been living in the trees themselves for about a year and a half? yes, those crazy berkeleyans living in the trees. well, today the school hired an arborist who cut down supply ropes and one of the platforms built in the trees in an attempt to get them to come down. in the process a shitbucket (literally, a bucket filled with shit) fell down and splattered on the ground. nasty. and the hxc tree-sitters still aren't coming down.
the students are holding a candlelight vigil in support of the tree sitters tonight.
just like they held a vigil the time they made naked guy [link] (RIP :[) put on clothes.

same-sex marriage in san francisco

last month, the california supreme court ruled that denying marriage to gay and lesbian couple violated the states constitution, becoming the second state (behind massachusetts) and seventh district-thingy worldwide (behind massachusetts, canada, spain, belgium, the netherlands and south africa) to offer equal marriage rights to ALL couples. unlike massachusetts, however, there are no residency restrictions, so any couple from any state are expected to come out here.

today is the first full day that the couples can actually get married, with mayor gavin newsom presiding in san francisco and ceremonies throughout the state.
